Fabric8 FUNDIES Charity Project
Join Fabric8, Warriors of Hope & the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in making FUNDIES for kiddies is need!
What are FUNDIES? It’s a cute little name for the cute little undies/ underwear that we’re sewing for kiddies in need. Kiddies often arrive at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital with only the clothes on their back, and potentially needing to stay there for months on end! We want to give these kiddies their dignity back and help them be more comfortable during their often challenging hospital stay.

Fabric8 is a family business that was started by Amanda and Jeanne Badenhorst, sisters in law who shared a passion for creativity and craft. It wasn’t long before Amanda’s daughter Lisa joined the business completing the Badenhorst trio. Since the end of 2020 they have been running this online creative store that offers a wide range of craft and sewing products but also focuses on building a fun community of South African crafters and sewers.
Because Fabric8 is more than just a business, they have decided to use the community they have built to make a difference in South Africa to help those in need.
Zeenat Parker is the Founder of the organisation Warriors of Hope that was established in 2014.
Our Mission is to SPREAD A LITTLE HOPE, SHOW A LITTLE LOVE, GIVE A LITTLE STRENGTH and encourage the brave little hearts and their loved ones at Red Cross Memorial Hospital to KEEP THE FAITH. Part of our mission is to help these children believe in Life amidst the Trauma associated with being ill, maintaining peace and wholeness within.
We support Red Cross Children’s Hospital in many of their fundraising events, and recently we handed over a 50K cheque towards their Emergency Unit.
We believe that every child is born with a purpose, skill, and talent but it’s not being recognised due to the social ills which surrounds them. Poverty, neglect, drug and alcohol abuse as well as emotional, physical and sexual abuse are some of the common problems facing many children in these in previously disadvantaged communities. So, even when these children are given the necessary medical care they go home still completely vulnerable.
The need to help children develop well on all levels must be addressed if we want to create a more functional nation of healthy, respectful, responsible and happy citizens.
THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE
Awards for Warriors of Hope:
- Lead SA Award- Selfless giving and mentorship programme- 2014
- Service to Humanity award in 2017
- Establishment of a Wellness program in schools offering and dedicating our energy to these vulnerable children on a weekly basis, supporting them in becoming better versions of themselves.
Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital provides medical care for critically ill and injured children from across the country. Exacerbated by impoverished and unsafe home circumstances, cases are complex and mean that some little ones are in hospital for prolonged periods, often requiring frequent follow-up visits. Alongside their medical treatment, many of these children require additional material aids essential to assist their recovery. These include a change of clean clothing and underwear, nappies, hygiene products, nutritional support and/or transport funds to attend treatment visits or emergency placements. The Family Care Project aims to support the Hospital’s Social Work department to provide for the emergency material needs of vulnerable patients and families attending the Hospital.
How to make FUNDIES
Our latest charity project
Fabric8 has recently identified a real place where they believe as a business they can make a difference. Our 9 year old cousin is currently being treated for cancer at Red Cross Children’s hospital so we have decided to join forces with Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Warriors of Hope.
This new project focuses on providing underwear to children between the ages of 2 and 12.
This is due to the large number of families that come to a Red Cross Hospital. Young children that come to the Red Cross often only have the clothes on their back, sometimes they don’t even have anyone to accompany them. These children sometimes spend months in hospital and because they are less fortunate they don’t have multiple pairs of underwear. Children that have prolonged stays in hospitals will get hospital gowns however the hospitals don’t have underwear for these children. This means that often these less fortunate children often go without.
How you can make a difference
Upon hearing about this it broke our heart as this is a real travesty, but more importantly it is a travesty that we can solve. Amanda has created a pattern for underwear that is simple to make and also unisex. With your help and contributions we can make a real difference.
The way that you can make a difference is by donating your time for sewing and all offcut fabric you have or could possibly source. If you are located in Cape Town then we will organize a collection point or alternatively you could courier your donations to us! As far as the other provinces are concerned we are hoping to get organisers/co-ordinators for each province that will be able to help us with all logistics. That part of the project will be ongoing but what is important is that we get the project launched ASAP.

Past Charity Projects
COVID-19 mask project
Back in 2020 when the need for masks was at an all time high Amanda decided that she could help, as she had the sewing knowledge, equipment and contacts to help fill this desperate need. Amanda organised a group of over 150 volunteers throughout South Africa, to help provide masks for those front-line heroes that were fighting against the virus. Amanda and her group of Super Sewers managed to produce over 40 000 masks that were then given away for free.
Many nurses, caregivers in old-age homes, police officers, the Army, the Navy, individual doctors, hospitals, feeding schemes, NGOs all received masks thanks to Amanda and her Super Sewers.
